Whas 11 Weather


(WHAS11) – Fire dangers have increased across Indiana and Kentucky due to long dry spells and high winds.

Open burning bans have been issued in more than half of Indiana’s counties including nearly the state’s entire southern half.

The national weather service has classified the southern half of the state as under severe or moderate drought.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - A strong line of thunderstorms bore down on the Louisville area after blowing over trees and dropping rain in western Kentucky.

The National Weather Service issued a tornado warning for Edmonson and Grayson Counties until 11:45 a.m.

National Weather Service hydrologist Mike Callahan in Louisville said the storms blowing through Tuesday as part of a cold front include straight line winds in excess of 75 mph, with 40-to-50 mph gusts outside of the thunderstorms.

The storms spawned tornado warnings across much of the state.

Rick Shanklin, warning coordination meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Paducah, said a roof came off a building in Hopkinsville and downed trees were scattered around western Kentucky, but damage appeared minimal.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Fulton County Crew reported a grain bin blew across the roadway on KY 94 near the Intersection with KY 971 and hit a vehicle. No injuries reported.

Shanklin said investigators will look into reports of tornados, but none had been confirmed as of midday Tuesday.

Forecasters spread a tornado watch to all but a the easternmost counties in Kentucky as the storms strengthened after daylight.

The NWS also issued a tornado warning for Ohio County, Todd County and Butler County in Kentucky until 10:30 a.m.

Tornado warnings for Christian and Muhlenberg Counties in Kentucky expired at 10:15 a.m.

Tornado warnings were posted Tuesday morning near Fort Campbell and Hopkinsville. No tornado touchdowns had been confirmed by 9:30 a.m., but a video camera in Hopkinsville shown on showed a wall cloud approaching the city.

Christian and Todd Counties in Kentucky were under a tornado warning until 10 a.m. A Tornado warning expired for Trigg County in Kentucky at 9:30 a.m.

Indianapolis - A storm system will move into central Indiana Tuesday, bringing rain and strong winds to the metro area during the noon hour.

A wind advisory was in effect until 8:00 pm Monday for gusty winds up to 30 mph. The winds Tuesday are expected to be even stronger.

Storms are likely after midnight, along with strong winds, with a low of 60 degrees.

It's been a couple of very dry months in Indiana. In August, Indianapolis only had .37" and in September, .56". We're up to nearly an inch of rain for the month of October, but more rain is needed to lift the burn bans. Up to a half-inch of rain is expected Tuesday during the day across Indiana. Some areas could see up to an inch.

There's also the possibility of isolated severe storms, including lightning, straight line winds and wind gusts up to 50 mph.

The rain will clear out by rush hour Tuesday, bringing slightly cooler temperatures Wednesday in the 60s.

The temperatures will stick to the 60s for the rest of the week, with a small chance of rain for Halloween on Sunday.

Earlier Tuesday morning, www.duke-energy.com reported a total of 2,146 homes in Clay County without power. By noon, however, that number had dwindled to approximately 50.

The National Weather Service (NWS) based in Indianapolis issued a severe thunderstorm warning Tuesday morning for Clay County.

At 8:27 a.m., NWS radar indicated a line of thunderstorms capable of "producing destructive winds in excess of 70 mph."

The organization announced a tornado watch was in effect for the area as well and a high wind warning.

The high wind warning will remain in effect until 8 p.m., Tuesday.

According to the organization, strong winds would impact central Indiana through Tuesday.
