PRESS STATEMENT

All information PRESS STATEMENT.Disscuse about for Press Statement.Press Statement-We have received complaints from several Kenyans who sort to serve their country through gainful employment in the Kenya Defence Forces that there is massive corruption, including nepotism, in military recruitment exercises. Many citizens who successfully went through the rigorous quota-based recruitment in their home districts have arbitrarily been sent home from Recruits’ Training School on the whimsical decisions of senior military officers in questionable circumstances. Our specific attention has been drawn to the case of 14 discharged soldiers who had successfully been recruited to rejoin the armed forces Constabulary in 2009. They were contracted in writing and put on payroll, but one day, as they went about their duties, they were summoned by a senior military officer who verbally dismissed them. He issued them with gag orders that should they ever talk they would earn the wrath of the military. He then had them forcefully removed from the military base by an armed detail of the Military Police. There are allegations that the names of the 14 are still on payroll and somebody is earning their money. If that is true, then Kenya is in the unimaginable situation whereby we have ghost soldiers in the military. That is a major a security threat to the State that might only be removed by conducting a headcount of all serving soldiers. Some of the 14 sought and were successfully recruited again this year, only to be unceremoniously thrown out a second time. Among them was Senior Sergeant (Retired) Alpheus Ochieng Kajwang whose plight was highlighted in an exclusive report published on page 3 of the Saturday Nation of November 6, 2010. In view of the reports we have been getting, this story is just the tip of the iceberg of the rot in the military. It is unbelievable that a citizen who fulfils the stringent requirements to serve our forces, and is recruited through a rigorous exercise, can just be dismissed at the pretended discretion of senior military officers with no recourse to an appeal. There are also allegations that some of the young recruits to the core military formations are dismissed shortly before they graduate (pass out) and their positions dished out to relatives and friends of highly connected Kenyans who don’t go through the rigours of military training. If these allegations are true, then we have untested laymen masquerading as soldiers in the Kenya Defence Forces. And that too is a major security risk to the republic. Other than the security threats the ghost and masquerading soldiers pause to the country, those who are unfairly dismissed, especially the youngsters, have skills in the use of weapons that can be tapped by organized crime to heighten the levels of insecurity in the country. Since recruitments are quota-based for purposes of equity and national representation (see Article 241 (4) of the Constitution on the Establishment of Defence Forces and Defence Council), and the number of personnel required is predetermined by military needs, what criterion is followed to replace those who are dropped, given that no follow-up recruitment is carried out in the affected areas, yet the vacancies created are always filled? In such circumstances, and in the absence of contrary evidence, we are obliged to believe allegations that there is an intricate web of corruption through which such slots are sold to the highest bidder, or are taken over by relatives and friends of the well-connected. It is important that our military leaders take cognizance of the fact that Kenyans who offer to serve in the military don’t lose their civic and human rights under the law. Any discretions of the military command notwithstanding, the military are a creature of the law, they are not above the law, and they are not allowed to operate outside the law. Hence, any recruits who are irregularly dismissed must enjoy their full Constitutional rights, including the provision on Fair administrative action in Article 47, which categorically states that: (1) Every person has the right to administrative action that is expeditious, efficient, lawful, reasonable and procedurally fair. (2) If a right or fundamental freedom of a person has been or is likely to be adversely affected by administrative action, the person has the right to be given written reasons for the action. Kenyans will not condone impunity anymore! Therefore, we make the following demands: (i) That, with immediate effect, the military unconditionally readmits the affected 14 citizens and any others who have been unjustly dismissed on similar flimsy grounds, or it fully pays them for their un-served contractual term in lieu of readmission. Failure to which we will be forced to institute public interest court proceedings against the military in general and culpable individual officers for abuse of office. (ii) That the Parliamentary Select Committee on Defence and Foreign Relations thoroughly investigates the matter and recommends appropriate disciplinary action to be taken against culpable officers. Finally, we call upon His Excellency President Mwai Kibaki to institute radical military reforms that will go hand-in-hand with the reforms underway in other public institutions. Failure to reform the Kenya Defence Forces constitutes creating national insecurity. We propose that distinguished retired officers with demonstrated guts like General Daudi Tonje, and General Ken Opande should be tasked to urgently restructure and modernize the Kenya Defence Forces. We need to restructure both the colonial military architecture and doctrine still in vogue and streamline it with the requirements of the new Constitutional dispensation. Among others, the reforms should also address: (i) The need to establish a robust commission or tribunal to take care of the welfare of soldiers and their families; (ii) The need to handle the many grievances of former military personnel who allege that they were unfairly dismissed from military service during the dictatorial First Republic; (iii) The need to fence-in the discretion of senior military officers with clear checks and balances to safe guard the human rights of individual soldiers in the Second Republic; (iv) The establishment of a functioning and visible reserve force to keep tabs on discharged officers, and to utilise the many skills Kenyan taxpayers have invested in them. For example, the discharged soldiers can form an important component in disaster preparedness.

Willow Palin

"Sarah Palin's Alaska," an eight-week series sort-of chronicling the life of former Alaska governor and vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin and her family, premiered Sunday night (Nov. 14) on TLC. What did you think?
First off, we don't think the show is a actually a real depiction of the Palins' life in any given summer in Alaska. Do they really jet around fishing for salmon and hiking Mt. McKinley like the rest of us might go to the pool or see a movie? Maybe they do -- but we are skeptical.
Compare this to the other latest TLC hit "Sister Wives" -- we believe that the five-week showcase on that program really did show a typical few months in the lives of Kody Brown and his brood. "Alaska," by contrast, seemed a little forced.
Secondly, we could've done without the few random pointed political comments, like using the Palins' erection of a high fence in their backyard (to keep out a neighbor who moved next door to write a book about them) to make a comment about our nation's borders. Again -- that was awkward and forced.
Third, the constant "come to beeeeyoootilful Alaskahhhhh" schtick was annoying. We get that Alaska is an amazing state, but the Palin family could've gone on all their nature adventures and just let the state speak for itself. The show did not need to seem like one long commercial for the state's tourism.
All that other stuff aside, we do think it's interesting to see the moments that are just Sarah and her family being themselves. Imagine for a second that Palin had never risen to any political prominance and was just this pretty Alaska lady going on nature adventures with her hsuband and kids? It's kind of delightful. She seems like a nice lady, she loves her family and the scenery is beautiful.
And we will give Palin credit -- she doesn't seem to take herself too seriously. She actually says that entering the political stage as she did has opened her up to mockery and that's just the way it is. It's nice to see her just accept that and roll with it.
Perhaps that's the entire hidden agenda -- make Sarah Palin even more appealing than she already was so that she can run for something in 2012. We don't know. But we will be here every week with you as we all experience "Sarah Palin's Alaska."

The accent is cracking us up. It's a little annoying, but mostly it's just hilarious.
Where has Willow Palin been hiding? Forget Bristol -- Willow Palin is a cutie. Mom should have her everywhere in 2012 if she's running for office.
The Palins have a TV studio-esque set up in a building near their house so Sarah can do satellite TV appearances. We can't decide if that's just too weird or kind of awesome.
Who wants to hang out with Sarah's mom and dad Sally and Chuck? We do. More Sally and Chuck, please. Maybe they could have a spin-off -- "Chuck and Sally's Bucket List" coming to TLC in 2011.

Steve Nash Divorce

Usually after a couple is blessed with a couple they celebrate in a variety of ways, but Steve Nash, he did it in a very unique way. He announced that he and his wife of five years – Alejandra Nash – would be getting a divorce.

On Friday the NBA Phoenix Suns’ point guard’s welcomed son Matteo Joel Nash. This was the third child for Alejandra and Steve, they also have twin girls named Lola and Bella. He talked about this “bittersweet moment” in a statement saying:


“I am very thankful and excited that we have a new son, Matteo Nash. Alejandra and the baby are doing fine.But this is a bittersweet moment for my wife and I; after five years, we are now in the process of dissolving our marriage. While we have lived separately for the past several months, we remain firmly committed to raising our children in the most positive, nurturing way possible. I want only good things for all going forward; right now, I’m focused on ensuring that our children understand how much they’re loved and adored by us as they continue to adjust to these changes. I would ask that their privacy, and ours as a family, be respected as we move forward. This will be my only statement on this.”

Wow. There really must have been some issues in their marriage if they couldn’t bond and be together to welcome their new child.

Wisconsin Unemployment

A long time ago, but not in a galaxy far, far away, I recall dreading taking home that first-quarter report card from school.

I wasn’t the best student, but wasn’t the worst either. What made getting not-so-spectacular grades even more difficult was I had to have a parent sign my report card before turning it back in to my teacher, which guaranteed they would see it.

I recall having my mom sign report cards more frequently than my dad because she didn’t yell quite as loud.

Fortunately, the older I got, my school performance improved and by the time I was in my fourth year of college, if I received any grade lower than a B+, I would be disappointed in myself. At that stage in my academic life, I had no worries about my parents viewing my report cards even before I saw them. After all, who’s going to complain when six courses are marked with either an A or A-?

The government also prefers pointing to the good in economic data.

The state last week released the September unemployment numbers for Wisconsin’s primary metropolitan areas. All 12 regions showed a drop in unemployment.

The state’s overall jobless rate for September was 7.8 percent, down from 8.8 percent a year ago. That’s great news. The state credited an improving economy to the drop in unemployment.

However, a look at the seasonally adjusted numbers shows the state’s current work force at 3,031,000, that’s down 27,900 people from the 3,058,900 in September 2009. The data also reveals in September, 2,795,500 of our current work force is employed, that’s about 4,300 more than were employed a year ago.

Economists I contacted were puzzled by the state’s positive outlook.

“I’m not sure what the Department of Workforce Development is so excited about,” said Brian Jacobsen, an analyst with Wells Fargo Advantage Funds and an associate professor of economics for Wisconsin Lutheran College. “The labor force has shrunk by 27,900 people from a year ago … Employment has only increased by 4,300. This is not the time to be cheerleading.”

Scott Niederjohn, associate professor of economics at Lakeland College, said the economy needs a jump-start.



“Removing the uncertainty would be a good first step,” he said. “A decision by Congress on the Bush tax cuts would help.”

President Barack Obama and his administration are pondering whether to break apart the tax cuts. The plan calls for a permanent extension of cuts for families earning less than $250,000 a year, and a temporary extension of cuts on income above that.

Republican leaders have pushed to extend the Bush tax cuts, which expire in December, for all income brackets, while the president says the country cannot afford to keep tax breaks on income over $250,000 a year for families, or $200,000 for individuals.

Jacobsen said something must to be done to spark job creation.

He suggests, at the state level, elimination of corporate income taxes could be an effective lure to draw new business into Wisconsin.

Until something is done, Niederjohn is uncertain things will improve, particularly in the near term.

“I expect little or no change,” he said. “There is too much uncertainty in the private sector due to tax and health care policy to see major gains in private sector employment … Further, firms have learned to become more productive using less workers to do the same job.”

The Bureau of Economic Analysis, an arm of the Department of Commerce, last week reported the nation’s economy grew at an annual rate of 2 percent in the July-to-September quarter. That’s a slight increase from 1.7 percent rate logged during the April-to-June quarter.

The government credited increased consumer, business and government spending to the slight increase. Keep in mind the number is an early estimate, so it still can go up or down when the revised official and final third-quarter number is released Dec. 22.

I’ve always been an optimist when it comes to writing about the economy. There have been some good things happening around the region in terms of hiring and expansion news, though we could use more.

In conversations I’ve had with business professionals, I sense their mood is more positive than it was a year ago.

A majority of people I’ve spoken to seem to accept the road to better times will be long and slow. As long as everyone can remain patient and just keep moving forward, in the end, we will be fine.

American Brandon Rios showed impressive form in scoring a fifth-round technical knockout win over Omri Lowther in their super lightweight showdown in another undercard of the Manny Pacquiao-Antonio Margarito showdown at the Cowboys Stadium in Texas.

Rios, who was caught on video mocking Freddie Roach’s Parkinson’s disease, along with Antonio Margarito and Robert Garcia, jacked up his record to 26-0-1 with 19 knockouts.

Two-time National Basketball Association MVP Steve Nash of Victoria, point guard for the Phoenix Suns, added a son to his family yesterday.



Nash’s wife, Alejandra, gave birth to Matteo Joel Nash, weighing seven pounds and seven ounces. After the birth, the St. Michaels University School grad Nash played in the Suns’ home game against the Sacramento Kings.

Steve and Alejandra Nash also have five-year-old twin daughters, Bella and Lola.

The family is trans-national with all three children born in the United States. Nash, the former Canadian Olympic team hoops captain, was born in Johannesburg, South Africa and raised in Victoria, while Alejandra is from Paraguay. The Nashes reside in Phoenix during the season and New York during the off-season.

Barefoot Bandit

Before Colton Harris-Moore became famous as an international fugitive, before he attracted more than 100,000 fans on Facebook and before he stole a single airplane, he was one very unpopular teenager back in his hometown of Camano Island, Wash.

“Colton Harris Moore is nothing but a thief, a criminal,” Camano resident Josh Flickner says. “He’s not Robin Hood. He’s not Jesse James. He’s not James Bond.”

Colton’s crime spree on this tranquil island began when he was just 10 years old. He soon advanced to breaking into homes, using stolen credit cards and stealing boats. Now, at age 19, he has a $10,000 price tag on his head and a bounty hunter on his trail.

This past summer, residents of Camano Island reached a breaking point and gathered to discuss rumors that were frightening everyone.

“We want him stopped,” says a man at the gathering. “Most of us what him dead, period.”

A crowd roars, “No,” in response.

How did it come to this? Why would anyone want to kill this troubled teenager?

“I mean, he is a criminal,” says Ashley Martin, who grew up with Colton on Camano Island. “But at the same time, there really is a little part of me that just really feels bad for him because I’ve known him, you know, almost my whole life.”

Martin remembers Colton as “a very sweet little kid.”

Classmate Jessica Wesson remembers a little boy who always loved animals and airplanes.

“He was really smart, very into airplanes. He had a Boeing book of all the planes that they actually made,” she tells “48 Hours Mystery” correspondent Peter Van Sant.

“And did he tell you what he wanted to do for a living when he grew up?”

“He mentioned that he wanted to be a pilot,” she replies. “When we heard he was stealing planes, I was like, well, that kinda makes sense.”

Wesson says she never went to Colton’s house. Maybe he didn’t want her to see the dilapidated trailer where he grew up with his mother, Pam Kohler.

“Why do you think Colton went from being this sweet kid that you knew when you first met him into a criminal?” Van Sant asks.

“Probably his upbringing,” Wesson replies. “I hear his mom wasn’t so nice…”

“48 Hours” Investigator Paul Ciolino uncovered court records that showed a dozen calls to child protective services by the time Colton was just 14.

“The issue here with Colton is not so much what he did, but who created this kid,” Ciolino explains. “There was physical abuse. There was mental abuse. There was physical neglect.”

Author Bob Friel is writing a book about Colton’s life called “The Barefoot Bandit: The True Tale of Colton Harris-Moore, New American Outlaw.”



“I was having nightmares when I began to research his childhood… I would literally wake up in a sweat thinking about some things… Colt went through,” Friel says. “His biological father was in and out of that trailer home that Pam was in.”

Colton’s father, Gordon Moore, has been mostly absent from his life. But when Colton was 12, Gordon was convicted of assault for choking the boy. Colton told a child services caseworker that his mother, Pam, was outraged – at him – for calling 911.

Colton had nowhere to turn. As one case worker wrote, “Colton wants mom to stop drinking and get a job and have food in the house, mom refuses.”

“Pam chose beer over everything… It ruined his life,” says Jacquie Staggs, who has known Pam since Colton was born.

Asked how Colton got his name, she says, “If you ask Pam, she’ll tell you she named him after the beer.”

“You’re telling me that Pam named her son after Colt 45? The malt liquor?” Van Sant asks.

“Uh-huh. That’s what she told me.”

“48 Hours” wanted to try and meet Colton’s mother. Investigator Paul Ciolino and Producer Sarah Prior joined Van Sant on a walk up the dirt driveway to find some answers.

“That’s her house. Sarah, if she calls out, why don’t you say that you’re the one who left the note,” instructs Van Sant.

A homemade sign out front shows Pam does not like visitors. It reads: NOTICE IF YOU GO PAST THIS SIGN YOU WILL BE SHOT.

Peter Van Sant: Hello, Pam?

Pam Kohler: Who are you?

Sarah Prior: Hi, I’m Sarah. I left you a note the other day from CBS…

Pam: I’m getting my shotgun right now.

Sarah: We just wanna talk to you, Pam. Can you just talk to us for a moment?

Pam: I’m getting my shotgun now. Get out of here!

Later, Pam changed her mind. Off camera, she told “48 Hours” she’s always been a good mother to Colton. She also showed us a collage he made when he was 15, filled with images of things Colton might say he was missing in life: money, food and, of course, airplanes.

“When Colton Harris-Moore would break into a vacation home… he would use the shower. He would wash his clothes and he would sleep on the bed or sleep on the couch,” Friel says. “…He was not the traditional kid breaking in to steal booze and damage a house.”

But along the way, Colton did more than more just grab a snack and a shower. He stole laptops, iPods, cell phones and jewelry.
