Nov 8, (THAINDIAN NEWS) Iconic actress and civil rights activist Ruby Dee was honored at the ‘Black Girls Rock’ show that was aired on BET on Sunday night. The show was hosted by Nia Long and some of the biggest names in the entertainment as well as other people who have made an impact on society. The show was recorded a month ago by the network but was aired on Sunday night. Ruby Dee gave moving acceptance speech where she said that it was times like these that she understood and appreciate what it means to be considered a legend.
Ruby Dee was honored with a Living Legend Award at ‘Black Girls Rock’ which also presented awards to other African-American women for their contribution to the community and impact on society. Lynn Whitfield who presented the award to the civil rights activist and iconic actress introduced Ruby Dee as the woman who represents everything that ‘Black Girls Rock’ stands for.
BET’s Debra Lee also said about the show that Ruby Dee’s appearance on the show was something that moved her the most. She said that in spite of being such a huge legend she danced down the red carpet and also had an amusing expression when being honored. Rev. Dr. Iyanla Vanzant, another icon who received the Motivator award also gave an exceptional speech on receiving the honor. She said that Black Girls Rock because they have no other choice. She explained that it was the responsibility of African-American women to rock the community, the society and the world to ensure that their grandmothers did not die in vain.
