The entire original cast of The Sound of Music reunited for The Oprah Winfrey Show on October 28. The Sound of Music, released in 1965, was the Academy Award-winning Rodgers and Hammerstein movie musical starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer.
The whole cast hasn’t been together for an interview since the movie! Both Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer were on hand for The Sound of Music Oprah reunion – Christopher Plummer was 34 at the time they filmed Sound of Music; Julie Andrews was 28 when she was cast.
Andrews talks about being a child prodigy and said by 10 she was on stage. By the time she was 13, she really recognized her voice was a gift.
Julie Andrews also talks a bit about the muscular striation on her vocal chords she had removed in 1997. Her voice was permanently damaged from the surgery. She says she has about six good low notes and she sings-speaks now. It was a huge loss in her life, but she began writing books.
It was such a treat to see the actors who played the von Trapp children in The Sound of Music – all grown up! Naturally, they all have such terrific memories of making the movie .
The Sound of Music Oprah special shows the casting of seven unknown kids to play the von Trapp children, chosen from over 200 kids who auditioned, including Mia Farrow!
Christopher Plummer has never taken part in a Sound of Music reunion before – calling the film in the past “The Sound of Mucus.” He said his role of Captain Von Trapp was not one he wants to be remembered most for, noting that he didn’t think the character was human enough.
Oprah’s Sound of Music reunion also featured a performance by the singing group The Von Trapp Children, which includes members of the real Von Trapp family.
